Rajasthani Terah Taali Folk Dance Group
Terah Taali is a traditional folk dance that originates from the royal land of Rajasthan. This unique dance form is mainly performed by the Kamada community, who were historically known as snake charmers. Apart from them, communities such as Mirasi, Bhand, Dholi, Bhat, and Nat also perform this traditional dance. In regions like Pokhran and Didwana, the Terah Taali dance is performed to pay tribute to the respected folk hero Baba Ramdev. In this performance, women usually sit on the floor in front of his image and present this devotional and cultural dance form. It is considered one of the most famous and admired Rajasthani folk dances.
Highly trained artists perform the Terah Taali Dance with great skill and dedication. In this performance, thirteen small brass cymbals known as manjeeras are tied to different parts of the dancer’s body. The dancer strikes these cymbals using the ones held in her hands, creating a rhythmic sound that perfectly matches the background music. While performing, the dancers display graceful hand movements and sometimes balance pots on their hands while even holding a sword in their mouth to make the act more impressive. The dance usually begins with the female performer seated on the floor with manjeeras tied to her wrists, elbows, waist, and arms, while the accompanying musicians slowly begin chanting and playing rhythmic music.

Terah Taali Dance is considered a complex yet beautiful folk dance of Rajasthan. The sight of thirteen cymbals tied across the dancer’s body creates a fascinating visual experience for the audience. The way the dancer synchronizes the sound of the manjeeras with the rhythm of the music makes the performance truly captivating. These cymbals and metallic discs used in the dance are commonly made from metals like brass, bronze, copper, and zinc. To add more excitement to the act, experienced dancers sometimes perform while balancing pots on their head or hands and even holding a sword in their mouth. During the performance, male artists sing traditional Rajasthani folk songs and play instruments such as the pakhawaj, dholak, jhanjhar, sarangi, and harmonium to create an energetic musical background.
